46 years ago tonight

38 year old Willie Mays got his 600th homer

It was only his 13th of the year. He had turned 38 that year and was looking worn down. He had been bothered by injuries that season.

Mays enjoyed a resurgence in 1970, hitting 28 homers, and got off to a fast start in 1971, the year he turned 40. He had 15 home runs at the All-Star break but faded down the stretch and finished with 18.

I'm so fortunate that I got to see him play. I was there in 1962 when he hit nos. 48 and 49 in the first game of the playoffs and I got to see him get hit number 3,000 in 1970
