I blame Bochy

The Giants have just lost a heartbreaker, 10-9, at the Coors Dump. Bruce Bochy decided to press his lucky in the 5th with the bases loaded and keep Bumgarner in after he loaded the bases -- when he was obviously no longer effective -- and then give a grand slam.

Bochy obviously knows what he's doing with 2 World Series crowns but it drives me crazy when this happens. What the hell are the 11 guys in the pen for?

UPDATE -- A well-thought out comment about how there really isn't that much difference at that point using Bumgarner or Kontos, who came in after the slam. I'd only say that there are 29 MLB parks at which that thinking is applicable; and then there's Coors Dump, which requires a super-quick hook.

Bochy clearly wanted to give Bumgarner a chance to get a win, by letting him complete 5 innings, with the Giants' having the possibility of scoring in the 6th. What do you take to be the difference in probability that Bum could get Pacheco out and that Kontos or Casilla could get him out? This season Pacheco hadn't hit a HR or, for that matter a triple, up to this game; and he was the 8th place hitter tonight. Is the differential between laboring Bum and fresh Kontos, pitching to a guy with Pacheco's profile and two out, really all that great?

An excellent point. However, I'd say that since it was at Coors, any manager should have a super-quick hook -- more so than at any other MLB park. Though I say that with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight

I watched the game and IMO, Bumgarner was clearly gassed. I got called away from the TV right when he walked LeMahieu. When I got back, I couldn't believe Bumgarner had faced Pacheco and was not the least bit surprised by the outcome. In my mind, Kontos or Casilla had a much better chance of getting Pacheco out and Bochy ended up having to take Bumgarner out short of 5 IP anyway.
