A brutal Thursday for the Orange and Black

Let's recap, shall we?

First off, there was the game itself being blown in the 9th, thanks to the suddenly ineffective pen and shortstop Brandon Crawford, per Henry Schulman's game story. Presumably, Henry wrote the other two stories that I'm linking to.

Secondly, Heath Hembree, who should have been in the majors by now, has been sidelined an elbow injury.

Finally, Freddie Sanchez isn't coming back this year. He had to have back surgery. He hasn't played since June 10, 2011.

The Hembree development is particularly troubling, given that the current closer, Santiago Casilla, has been pretty bad lately. Why Brian Sabean believes that it's better to use marginal guys like Steve Edlefsen and George Kontos instead of legit prospects is beyond me. Grant Bisbee at McCovey Chronicles believes that this may be the game that makes the Giants trade for a closer. He even warns that the extremeley annoying and overweight Jonathan Broxton is available.
