The Greatest Giant will be honored in Memphis on Jan. 17 as part of a celebration of the memory of Martin Luther King at a Grizzlies game. Lenny Wilkins and Willis Reed are also being honored as is Mavis Staples.

Two books I read recently do this "...greatest all-around player of all time" annointment good service; taking on the comparatives in different modes -- one all sabermetrically ('Baseball Between the Numbers', Baseball Prospectus), and Jane Leavy's new biog of The Mickster ('Mickey Mantle - The Last Boy') in a journalistic manner quoting both Willie and Mick repeatedly with righteous duty performed.
