More pain for the Orange and Black

Strange game with Kevin Correia departing after nine pitches and the rest of the middle inning staff -- Hennessey, Yabu, Taschner -- getting hammered. Will someone please explain to me why Brad Hennessey still has an MLB job? Lowry, Vizquel, Roberts and Correia are now all on the DL, which is never a good thing except that it should mean more opportunity for the Fresno guys. My guess is that we'll see Patrick Misch back in SF soon as he's put up the best numbers. And he pitched adequately last year in the bigs.

Speaking of worthless veterans like Hennessey, what exactly is the point of keeping Ray Durham out there? Here's how the ninth went. Thanks for nothing, Ray --

Todd Coffey pitching for Cincinnati
T Coffey relieved J Affeldt.
J Hairston in right field.
S Holm doubled to deep left.
J Castillo doubled to right, S Holm scored.
F Lewis walked.
F Cordero relieved T Coffey.
E Velez tripled to deep left center, J Castillo and F Lewis scored.
R Winn grounded out to second, E Velez scored.
D Ortmeier grounded out to second.
R Durham struck out looking.

Projected record -- 71-91

I know Hennessey has been struggling but I think our former #1 pick (2001; Matt Cain #1 in 2002) deserves the shot. With the injury to Correia, it seems like he'll get it. We'll know by the ASB if he should be demoted or cut loose. After all, development of young talent is what 2008 is all about. On that note, I agree: let's ship Durham and Aurilia. Eat the dollars--we are better off with Velez, Bowker, Burriss, etc. And how about Fred Lewis? Finally getting his chance and making the most of it!

It seems to me possible that both guys are (finally) starting to hit. From sort of a business point of view, doesn't it make sense to hold on to these (potential, if quickly declining) assets until July 1 to see if they have any trade value. If they haven't shown other teams anything by then and can't be traded, waiting until then to DFA them won't really hurt anything, will it? I mean, the season is barely 4 weeks old, seems kind of soon, given some faint indications of life in the old bats.

It's an interesting scenario, Allfrank. It would be great if that's how it played it. I would have to say that I'd also be surprised if either one played well enough to fetch anything on the trade market, given how poorly the front office has been at predicting performance (Klensko, Edgardo Alfonzo, Blownitez and now Zito). But I hope you're right!

I meant "how it played out." It's too late to be posting!
