What's so hard to understand?
After last night's 9th inning meltdown by Benitez at Mays Field, Felipe Alou said what you'd expect he'd say -- that Benitez is still the closer. Managers have to say things like that. You can bet that Sabean and Alou are sorting out their options -- Accardo? Worrell? -- and if someone like Steinbrenner came swooping in with a decent trade offer, they would pull the trigger. What's sort of maddening is the willingness of sportswriters to swallow Felipe's statement at face value. I just read this from Pete Cafone (whoever he is) on the Chronicle's Splash blog.
Meanwhile, this blogger who earlier in the week was hoping Benitez would get an opportunity to make it three saves in a row got his wish. And although it didn't turn out the way the Giants were hoping, his teammates and manager Felipe Alou reiterated after the game that Benitez was still the man. And right now, the Giants really have no other choice.
MEMO TO PETE CAFONE -- Get real. The Giants have all kinds of choices. Do you actually believe that it's acceptable for the Giants management to keep losing winnable games?
