The Ace Nets 16 Dead Fish

Well, the headlines can't all be gems. That's the best I could do early Wednesday after hearing about Schmidt's performance tonight. I was at Chavez Latrine to watch the Mets' Jose Valentin gag the game away to the Dodgers; the auxiliary scoreboard kept an SF 2, FLA 1 T9 score up for well over half an hour before changing the T9 to an F. During the entire evening, the only Jumbo-Tron update came with some unfunny 6-6-06 reference to the Angels-Devil Rays game, a 14-2 blowout. As Lisa Lupner used to say, "That's so funny I forgot to laugh." And as I keep saying -- clueless and classless are the bywords for the Dodger organization. It turns out Schmidt matched the 102-year-old franchise record, set by Matty himself, with 16Ks. I figured there had been multiple releivers but hours later, I discover it was just Schmidt pitching to five guys & preserving a 2-1 vic -- singles by Dan Uggla and Mike Jacobs, then Ks for Miguel Cabrera, Josh Willingham and Jeremy Hermida. In the meantime, Grady Little brought in Gagne in the 9th for the cheapo save (protecting a 3-run lead). The Fat Ugly Frenchie used little else but junk; his fastest fastball hit 91 mph. The 100 mph heater is nowhere in sight.
